What Is Period Dignity and Why It Matters
Period Dignity means ensuring that menstruation is never a source of shame, discomfort, or disruption. In Kenya, an estimated 65% of women and girls lack access to proper sanitary disposal facilities, leading to absenteeism from work and school, health risks from improper disposal, and the perpetuation of menstrual stigma. By providing accessible, hygienic disposal options in every washroom we service, we contribute to a cultural shift that normalizes menstruation and ensures dignity for all who menstruate.
Our Approach to Inclusive Washroom Design
We advocate for cubicle-level placement of disposal units — meaning every individual toilet cubicle has its own bin, not just a shared unit in the common area. This approach eliminates the discomfort of carrying used products across the washroom to a distant bin. Our bins are designed to be recognizable and intuitive for users of all ages, including young students encountering them for the first time. We also provide multilingual signage in English and Kiswahili to ensure clarity across diverse user populations.
Community Impact and Education Programs
Tugi HygiEne partners with schools, community health organizations, and corporate CSR programs to deliver menstrual health education workshops. These sessions cover proper disposal practices, menstrual health awareness, and breaking stigma around periods. To date, we have reached over 8,000 students through school outreach programs. We also facilitate corporate-sponsored sanitary product donation drives that supply free products to girls in underserved communities, directly reducing period-related school absenteeism.
